When the conflict began, the regular army had fewer than 7,000 troops when it ended, there were more than 38,000 regulars. North Carolinians served in both the regular army and the militia during the war. North Carolina governor William Hawkins quickly notified President James Monroe that the state would cooperate fully in executing the war.
